Afternoon

👋 Setting the scene

  • Introductions, agenda walk-through, materials and expectations.

🚑 Let’s fix strategy!

  • Warm-ups and discussions: the common problems with formulating, communicating, and executing strategy, and how visualising strategy can help.
  • Discussions and examples: strategy is both a product and a process, and how visuals help throughout the process and as products.

✍️ Drawing the elements of strategy

  • Drawing some common real-world objects and conceptual elements often used in strategic conversations and communications.
  • Drawing visual metaphors used in strategy.
  • Seeking out, using, and building upon common language, common experience, common values, and common metaphors.

💎 Drawing your strategy on a page

Drawing a range of different templates and patterns to visualise strategic concepts:

  • Strategic storytelling - mapping current state, future state, and reasons for change.
  • Strategy and systems - mapping the elements of businesses, products, services, customers, and markets as a system.
  • Strategy and teams - mapping the people, behaviours and capabilities needed to execute on strategy.

Matching visual patterns to your needs

  • Long-term envisioning
  • Transformation and change
  • Success definition, planning and tracking progress
  • Customer experience strategy
  • Team health and culture

🖼️ Your turn: your strategy on a page

  • Drawing your own strategy on a page, based on the patterns and templates we have been using so far.
  • In pairs, presenting your strategy, and giving feedback to each other about how to improve it.

🏢 Doing strategy as a team

  • Using templates and patterns to co-design strategy with teams and stakeholders.
  • Doing strategy as a flow of coordinated tasks, not just one strategy offsite.
  • Handling remote and hybrid strategy co-design meetings.

✨ Presenting your strategy

  • Using strategy on a page visuals instead of big long Powerpoint slide decks.

📙 Wrapping up

  • Reflecting on everything we’ve learned, and taking steps to implement some new ways of thinking and working.

Draw your way out of these common problems

You and your team don’t have to suffer these problems anymore:

  • Unproductive offsites and other strategy meetings, with nothing to show for all the talk
  • Spending way too long making strategy decks that are hard to understand and remember
  • Not enough alignment with decision-makers and stakeholders

Learning how to draw does not have to be a scary thing. Drawing at work using basic forms is something that everyone should master to be better communicators. Loved the content and interactivity. Ben is attentive, inclusive and full of great examples.

More praise for this training

Making a strategy with 22 people? Yes, that is possible and is even very valuable. But you have to facilitate it well. With Jeroen, we have had excellent guidance. Leading the days cheerfully and optimistically, challenging, asking questions, steering on the end result and excellent preparation. It is not without reason that he is at the top of my list when it comes to facilitating complex issues.

Balancing good content, participation, free time and fun is an art for a multi-day event... Jeroen and his team not only take care of organisational tasks, but they also add a lot of value based on their experience, making the event even more effective... The guidance was absolutely of a high level.

Willem

Willem de Bruijn, Sr. Director

Very surprising to hear everyone’s story told with the records. For some it was a real revelation. And it was especially with a lot of humour. In the days that followed, more drawings appeared in our group app! And the following week, colleagues started making drawings for customers in this way.
