Workshop outline

In this training, what you won’t learn is how to run Agile meetings.

What you will learn is a set of visual facilitation methods to deal with the pitfalls that can happen, and increase your value to the business even more. The visual aids provided will help you make the unspoken visual, and the unclarified visible.

Day 1

👋 Setting the scene

Introductions, agenda walk-through, materials and expectations

🤔 Visual Facilitation and Agile

We’ll level-set on what these terms mean, and gain a deeper understanding of the importance of facilitation and visualization in releasing more value and satisfaction in teams.

You’ll get started with markers and gain an introduction to the visual elements you’ll need to kick off your visual facilitation journey.

👀 Context - sensing and responding

No team, sprint, product or project exists in isolation. In this section, you’ll learn how to help your team:

  • Deal with ‘group amnesia’ and capitalize on what is learned
  • Embrace and deal with conflict and resistance positively
  • See and address any ‘elephants in the room’
  • Refresh the ritual, and go beyond the regular retrospectives and other meetings you might be running

🏆 Aspiration - setting visions, defining success

Reseach shows that ambitions made visual are more likely to be achieved. How do you create and visualize a vision together, in line with business strategy, and in a way that everyone involved has ‘skin in the game’? In this section you’ll learn how to:

  • Increase ownership in your team
  • Get the right people involved and speaking up at the right time in the right ways
  • Get authentic alignment and make decisions together faster, by making goals and decisions visible
  • Keep your team energized and motivated

Day 2

💡 Solution - building the right thing

Brainstorming has its critics, we still need to find opportunities, generate ideas, and make creative choices. In this section you’ll learn how to:

  • Define, visualize and/or reframe the problem to be solved, to generate better problem statements
  • Understand four types of creativity, and when to flex which type at the right time with the right people
  • Deal with tricky behaviours when generating and prioritising ideas

➡️ Execution - working with heart and purpose

Agile ways of working are all about people and interactions over processes and tools. Visuals help teams to get a better view on the more intangible ‘people’ aspects of work – like dependencies and culture issues – so that your team can focus on doing their best work together. In this section, you’ll learn how to:

  • Understand your team’s group dynamics, and how to use these dynamics to everyone’s advantage
  • Help any team diagnose themselves, get healthy and stay healthy
  • How to get clear roles and responsibilities (who ‘owns’ what...?)
  • Build greater trust amongst team members

📙 Wrapping up

It’s important that we do everything we can to help this training convert into action and positive impact. So to help with that, we will create a Visual Agile Facilitation Playbook together, for you to take back to your team!

Harness the power of visual facilitation

Running meetings using visual thinking, methods and templates helps people to listen better, think better and communicate better. Why? Because everything is visible, for everyone to read and connect with.

You will learn and use visual facilitation techniques and templates to:

  • Organise conversations visually, so that everyone can easily see where every meeting is going
  • Reframe, clarify and summarise important information, so everyone will have a shared understanding faster
  • Get your team thinking and talking visually, in ways where words aren’t enough

When the invisible becomes visible, conversations turn into real action and real results!
