Animated explainer video about trends in 3D printing for Materialise.

The challenge

Every year, Materialise produces a report about trends in the 3D printing industry. This year, they wanted to be just as innovative in producing a video, as the industry itself.

We were really excited to be part of this video, by providing sketch animation sequences to be combined with live action, in a really intriguing way (above).

Our approach

A huge element of this project was flexible teamwork: being able to work in with an existing creative team, amidst tight deadlines, while experimenting with different ways of animating and compositing the sketch animations as part of the live action (see below).

The script for this video was already approved and ready, so after consulting with the team, we followed our regular approach of establishing the overall vision and story concept first, and then sketching drafts of every scene. After feedback and changes, we illustrated each final scene as it would appear in the video. We even storyboarded the live action scenes, just to make sure that everyone was on the same page for what elements were in which scene.

It was a big challenge to simplify some complex concepts into simple pictures, all while keeping with Materialise’s existing brand guidelines. While Materialise already had quite an advanced icon library and visual language, they were happy to flex a bit when it came to developing a ‘hand-drawn’ look.

We really got to push ourselves creatively with this one! It was super fun to be able to use little different animated touches. And notice in the screenshot below how you can see the sketch on the table in perspective.

The outcome

Materialise were super happy with the result, and were proud to display it on their YouTube channel, as well as in trade booths and presentations at various conferences and events.
